The Perfect Ski Day

This morning, I stepped out of the condo, strapped on my skis, and immediately headed up the mountain.  Our condo in Breckenridge has the perfect location; it’s about 20 steps from the snowflake ski lift.  The only drawback of the condo’s close proximity to the lift is that we didn’t get to do a practice run before getting on it.

Our last ski trip was years ago, so I had this little voice in the back of my head asking me if I really remembered how to ski.  “Yes,” was my response.  I do remember how to ski.  I may be rusty, but I can do it.  Getting off the lift, however, is a different story.

I didn’t want to be “that” skier.  You know, the one who can’t get off the lift.  The one who falls down and looks like an idiot.  The one who makes the entire lift come to a halt while everyone stares as you try to get up.  Yeah, I didn’t want to be that person.

As the unloading area quickly approached, I felt apprehensive, nervous.  I think I even gave myself a “you can do it” pep talk and uttered a quick prayer.  I scooted to the edge of the bench, pointed my skis up, and got ready.  10 feet….5 feet…3 feet…it’s time!  I firmly planted both feet and stood slowly.  So far, so good.  I pushed slightly with my ski poles and glided down the incline with Gary by my side.  I did it!  No embarrassment…only a few cheers of glee that we both made it off the lift without incident.  Ah, what was so I worried about?  It’s just like riding a bike.

Truly, it’s amazing how quickly everything comes back to you.  After only a few short runs, I was flying down the slopes again enjoying the beautiful views and the wonderful weather.  It was the perfect day.  The temperature was just right — not too hot and not too cold.  The sun was shining brightly making the blue skies sparkle.  It was D-I-V-I-N-E.  We were enjoying it so much that we skied until the lifts closed.

Our “apre ski” activity was a Swedish massage at the Blue Sage Spa in Breckenridge.  It’s the perfect way to wrap up a long day of skiing.  My tired muscles loved it.  They are soothed now and ready for more skiing tomorrow.  Snow is in the forecast, so it should be a fun day.

Check out the video.  The quality is poor (windows movie maker stinks), but it’s better than nothing.  I’ll try to fix it later when I’ve got more time and better movie editing software.
