Holiday Envy

Do you know the worst thing about being married to someone in the banking industry?  Banks recognize most government holidays.  If you are in banking, it’s a great thing.  If you’re not, it can lead to a condition I like to call “holiday envy”.

Nothing is worse than going to work when your spouse is enjoying a fun-filled day off.  Of course, I’m happy he was able to take a nice break from work.  He deserved it.  Selfishly, though, I wanted one too.

Needless to say, I just didn’t feel like working today, and I wasn’t the only one.  There were quite a few people at my office that mirrored the same sentiment.  C’mon, if this holiday is good enough for the government, banks, post office, and most schools, shouldn’t it be good enough for the tech industry also?  After all, we like Presidents too.

Oh well…c’est la vie.  That’s just the way it goes.  I did get up.  I did work all day, and I was jealous of those who didn’t share my fate.

At the end of the day, I can’t complain too much.  I have a great career — one that offers me the flexibility to work at home, travel, and take on new challenges every day.  Sure, it’s stressful at times, and they don’t recognize President’s Day, but at the end of the day, the pros outweigh the cons.

Besides, I’m going skiing next week.  I’ll take that in lieu of President’s Day any time.
