I Still Hate DST

Yes, it’s true. I hate it. I don’t get it. Why do we have to change our clocks twice a year? Can’t we just agree on one time and stick with it? Or, here’s an idea, let’s split the difference, adjust the time by 30 minutes, and keep it that way.

After getting only a few hours of sleep last night (due to the stinking time change), I got up in the dark this morning and got ready for worship team practice at 8 am (formerly 7 am - did I mention I hate the time change?). I was SO tired, and I wasn’t the only one. We had a rough practice, but we managed to make it through both services — and God even showed up in spite of our tired flesh.

After singing in both services, I gulped down lunch and rushed to the McKinney Performing Arts Center to get ready for my final “Plaza Suite” performance at 2 pm. The Sunday matinee shows always feel a little strange to me. It’s odd performing in the middle of the afternoon. The crowds tend to be smaller and quieter. However, today’s group was pretty responsive, giving us a great ending to our two-weekend run with the McKinney Repertory Theatre.

It’s always bittersweet to end a production. I’ll miss the new friends I made, and I’ll miss the fun of performing. At the same time, it will be nice to have my time back — no more rehearsals, no more running lines. It will be great to relax for a bit. Of course, the break will be short-lived; rehearsals for our next show at ALC (Abundant Life Church) start in April. Oh well, I’ll enjoy it while it lasts!

Have a great week everyone, and when you get up tomorrow, remember my proposal about moving the clock forward 30 minutes and keeping it there. It would get rid of the DST torture forever!

Springing Forward

It’s a little past midnight, and I’m dreading the time change that will occur at 2 am. Daylight Saving Time (DST) gives us more sunlight during the day, which is a good thing during the summer, but I still hate losing that hour. I hate getting up earlier, and “springing forward” doesn’t put a spring in my step. Thinking about it is just making me feel more tired.

I went back to last year’s blog, and my opinion of DST hasn’t changed at all. Since I’m feeling really tired with the impending time change hanging over my head, I’m going to do what TV stations do all the time — air a repeat episode…er, blog…check it out: http://www.laurainsideout.com/2008/03/07/warning-dst-coming-soon/

Warning: DST Coming Soon

alarm.jpg

Yes, it’s that time again.  The dreaded Daylight Saving Time (DST) is quickly approaching.  At 2:00 am on Sunday, March 9 time will “spring forward” giving everyone in North America one additional hour of sunlight in the evenings.

Don’t get me wrong, Ben Franklin’s idea is great.  I love having an extra hour of daylight, especially on a nice summer night.  The reason I dread the switchover is that I hate the idea of losing an entire hour from my life.  Poof!  Just like that, it’s gone.  According to Webexhibits, in the early part of the 20th century, citizens of Great Britain actually protested the change, using the slogan, “Give us back our stolen hour.”  I wouldn’t go that far because you get the hour back.  It’s not stolen.  It’s simply put aside on “layaway”.  The hour is there; you just can’t use it until the Fall when DST ends.

The other downside of DST is that everyone has to wake up an hour earlier every day.  If you aren’t a morning person (and I’m not), it’s brutal.  It’s something you have to fight through until your internal body clock adjusts.  I don’t look forward to that process.  In fact, I dread it.  If I went to bed early, then it wouldn’t bother me as much, but with that extra hour at night, I don’t want to go to bed early.  I’m too busy enjoying my evening.

Ah, I can’t win.  I’m conflicted.  I both love and hate Daylight Saving Time.

How about you?
