Holly riding a camel at one of our rest stops French fries...yum! Our first look at the city of Jerusalem...from the bus.
Another shot from the bus as we were entering Jerusalem Old European-style windmill built on the top of the hill outside of the original city walls of Jerusalem. Funny story, though. It didn't work because they don't get much wind in Jerusalem. City walls -- another shot from the bus
Love the pedestrian signs with the image of a rabbi/orthodox Jew wearing a hat. :) Luxury apartment/condo residences in Jerusalem More Jerusalem from the bus
Israeli apartment settlement on the top of the hill Fields near Bethlehem where David may have tended sheep and where Ruth met with Boaz Sheepherders
Church honoring the announcement of Jesus' birth to the Shepherds in the field. Courtyard and fountain near the church The acoustics in this church were awesome. A few people sang "Angels We Have Heard on High," and it sounded like a large choir of voices...beautiful and amazing.

The perfect height...well, for me anyway. Area in Bethlehem where we stopped for lunch A guy herding sheep just outside our restaurant.
More Bethlehem Original mosaic floors in the church built over the spot where they believe Jesus was born. Waiting in line to go see the spot where He is believed to have been born
The small room where the shrines were set up. The location where many believe Jesus was born. No longer a humble manger. Pillars inside the church of the nativity. They were once covered in colorful paintings of the saints.
Underneath the church in the caves Inside the neighboring cathedral. This is where they broadcast the Christmas masses each year. Walls outside the church of the nativity
Bethlehem buses Streets of Bethlehem Narrow walkways and paths
City market with fresh fruit Look, it's a Starbucks...well, almost. The wall separating the Palestine-controlled Area A from the rest of Israel. Bethlehem is in the Palestinian area. Individuals from this area cannot pass into Jerusalem without special permits, and all vehicles must be inspected before being allowed int
Writing on the wall is very revealing, "To exist is to resist." Bad picture from the bus, but if you look closely you will see a flat hill. This is where King Herod the Great was buried Inside one of the museum's in Jerusalem is a large model of what the city of Jerusalem looked like in the time when Jesus lived. It's amazing.
Close up of the model of the fortress (on the left corner) where Jesus was tried and sentenced to death. The walls along the front and moving the the right show the outside walls of the Temple. Representing the poorer areas of the city in the foreground. The larger houses with the red roofs show the more affluent homes. Representing the lid of the jar that contained the Dead Sea Scrolls. The scrolls are displayed in the museum below this structure. No pictures could be taken once inside, but it was pretty cool to see a few of the pages from the scrolls.
Dinner and exploring on our first night in Jerusalem Having dinner at one of the local shops outside Streets of Jerusalem

Paula needed some extra covering for the tour :) The Dome of the Rock Standing in the area that was formerly the ancient temple of God. Jews are forbidden by the Torah to enter because the Holy of Holies was once located in this area. Because they don't know the exact location, they will not enter.
Outside the Dome of the Rock. The location where they believe Abraham took Isaac for the sacrifice. It was also the location of the first temple built by Solomon. Herod the Great built the temple on top of it, and that's what stood here in Jesus' time Archways leading to the Dome of the Rock. The entire area around the Dome is controlled by the country of Jordan...so interesting. Buildings surrounding the Dome of the Rock
