Reconnecting

Social media sites like MySpace and Facebook can be a great waste of time. You can spend hours updating your site, responding to comments, playing useless games, answering lame surveys and checking status updates. But one of the benefits of these sites is that they make it easy to stay in touch with people. They offer a “one-to-many” communications tool. They also provide a way to reconnect with old friends.

In recent weeks I’ve reconnected to friends with whom I haven’t spoken in over 20 years. It’s really cool to be able to bridge the gap and find out who they’ve become, where they live, and how many kids they have. Some have changed a lot; others not so much.

I met up with a few friends tonight who still live in the area. We went to dinner; I thought we’d catch up and be home about an hour later. I was wrong — our dinner ended just shy of the 3 hour mark. Even though we’re all older and much has changed, it just seemed like “old times”. We had so much to talk about — that made it hard to stop and walk away.

It’s funny how you can lose touch with people over time, but you still have a unique bond because of the experiences you shared when you were together. I guess it’s one thing time can’t change.

Dinner = $11. 43

Sodas = $1.95

Reconnecting with old friends = priceless

Weekend in Review

It’s Sunday evening which means it’s time for a quick “weekend in review”. So, here it goes:

  • Friday: Enjoyed a nice, relaxing night at home with Gary.
  • Saturday: Slept late (I love Saturdays!), performed household duties, and then spent the evening with the One Life young married’s group. We met up at Cheesecake Factory in Watters Crossing. Good food, great friends, and fellowship!
  • Sunday: It was my day to sing on the praise team, so I had to be at church at 8 this morning for practice (ugh!). Jonathan Dean from POA led worship today (totally love him; he’s amazing) and T.F Tenney preached. We had an incredible move of God in both services, but things really exploded in the 2nd service. It was so powerful that we didn’t have a chance to stop for preaching which is rare. Jeff H. said it best, “words aren’t adequate”. God’s presence permeated the building. It was so strong and so real. He spoke volumes to me today; I am renewed, revived. It was fabulous.

I’m looking forward to the coming week. I’m only working two days, and then I’ll be off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. I can’t wait!

Have a great week, everyone.

Twilight

Across the country, teenage girls flocked to the premiere of Twilight in theaters today. The film is based on a series of books written by author Stephenie Meyer, and the storyline follows a young girl who falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. For a review of the first book, check out Jessica’s blog, The Rules for Twilight.

I haven’t read any of the books or watched the movie, but since vampires are in the news this weekend, I decided to honor the top 5 most awesome vampires from both film and TV:

5. Lestat De Lioncourt (aka Tom Cruise) from Interview with a Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. Although I was more drawn to Louis (played by Brad Pitt) in the movie, Lestat is the perfect vampire anti-hero, so he deserves to make the Top 5.

4. Blade (Wesley Snipes) from Blade. I’m not a fan of the Blade movies, but Wesley Snipes does a great job of portraying a half-vampire, half-human who wants to rid the world of evil vampires. Besides, who doesn’t love Wesley Snipes?

3. DAVID (Keifer Sutherland) from The Lost Boys. Keifer Sutherland…need I say more? He’s awesome. And for those of you who are fans, his television series 24 kicks off on Sunday…get your Tivos ready!

2. Angel (David Boreanaz) from the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character of Angel was created by Joss Whedon, one of my favorite writers in Hollywood. Angel was a vampire cursed with a soul, seeking forgiveness and redemption for his past crimes. He was Buffy’s love interest in the original series, but later he appeared in his own spin-off show.

1. Spike (James Marsters) from the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, I do have two “Buffy” characters in my Top 5, but they both deserve it. Did I mention that Joss Whedon is a genius? Anyway, Spike is my all-time favorite vampire villain with a killer sense of humor. I absolutely loved his character…perfection.

If you didn’t watch the show, check out the DVDs. They’re worth it.

Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Today’s role models seem to consist mostly of manufactured film and movie stars or morally deficient sports athletes. In the post-Clinton era, even the office of the President doesn’t garner the respect it once did. Many famous evangelists and ministers have fallen from grace; Catholic priests have engaged in unheroic behavior by taking away the innocence of young boys. In this type of world, where are the heroes — the men and women with unwavering faith who stand up for what they believe regardless of the cost? Where are the Rosa Parks, Mother Theresas and Martin Luther Kings of the world? Do they exist today? Are they part of a bygone era?

Unfortunately, sports stars tend to be popular heroes for children today. These impressionable kids wear the jerseys of their favorite players, watch their games and model their behavior. Remember the popular catch phrase, “I wanna be like Mike”?

To be honest, there aren’t many sports stars that I want to be like, but one athlete does stand out from the pack. Take the following story from the Dallas Morning News as an example:

A homeless man who goes by Doc was cashing in change at a Cinemark theater in Dallas when a guy walked up and offered to pay his way into the movie. Doc, who planned to spend his day passing out flyers for a few bucks, accepted a rain check before realizing that he recognized the generous gentleman.

“Was that Tony Romo?” Doc asked the kid behind the counter.

It sure was. Doc hustled across the street to the consignment store that paid him to occasionally pass out flyers and requested the day off. By the time he got back to the theater, “Role Model” had already started.

Romo, who confirmed the story but didn’t want to elaborate, waved Doc over to sit by him and his buddy. Doc sheepishly mentioned that he hadn’t showered in a few days.

“Don’t worry about that,” Romo said. “I’m used to locker rooms.”

And so the $67 million quarterback and a man who doesn’t have $6.70 to his name sat next to each other and shared laughs for 90 minutes or so.

For Romo, who made news by changing a couple’s tire on the side of the road on the way home the night of the season opener, it was just another kind gesture to a random stranger. It meant the world to Doc.

“For me, it was a blessing,” Doc said. “It came at just the right time. It gave me some encouragement and faith in mankind. I just wanted to say thank you.”

Is Tony a hero? No. However, he is someone whose behavior I want to model. Few people do what he did that day, especially those with “celebrity” status. No, it doesn’t make him a hero, but it does show me that there are still some good role models out there…even athletes.

So, where have all the heroes gone? I don’t have the answers. It remains to be seen whether any notable heroes will arise in the midst of a society plagued with scandal, immorality and compromise. I want to believe they are still out there, and maybe…just maybe we’ll see them again one day in real life, not just in the movies.

Office Space

Staff Office

Can your office reveal things about your personality? According to a study conducted at the University of Texas at Austin, it can. Certain aspects of your personality are displayed through the choices you make each day, and it’s no different when you are in the office.

What does your office say about you? Well, according to the study:

  • Highly personalized space — Indicates individuals who are secure about their position and claiming their space.
  • Empty or Un-Personalized Desk — This indicates either a lack of dedication to the job or someone who is generally dissatisfied with the job—in either case, not a good sign.
  • Plants — Plants, whether they are cared for or not, reveal that a worker is planning to stay at the job.
  • Candy Bowl/Lots of Supplies — This worker wants people to come visit her and is an extrovert—shy or introverted types would never put anything on their desks that would draw others into their spaces.
  • Motivational/Inspirational Items — This is an ambitious person who is dedicated to his job and wants to remain engaged—can indicate someone who wants challenges and a chance to prove himself.
  • Family Photos — This can go two ways. If the photos are placed for others to see, it’s usually a status symbol and done more for the appearance. If the photos are placed for only the worker to see, they are usually genuine reminders of loved ones, which can motivate the worker or ease the guilt of spending so much time away from the loved ones.
  • Excessive Post-It Notes — Indicates the worker is feeling overwhelmed and not able to keep up.

My desk is a personalized space. It includes motivational items and family photos. It also has way too many post-it notes, which makes me question my sanity at times. I don’t have candy. It’s not that I don’t want to be friendly. I just work from home most of the time, and candy isn’t healthy.

So, that’s my office. What’s in yours?
